Buckingham Guest House, Port Elizabeth, Nelson
Mandela Bay
Buckingham Place - History
Built in 1907, Buckingham Guest House displays all the space and
graciousness of it's Edwardian origins.
In 1930 Dr Ray Schauder, the daughter of a future
Mayor of Port Elizabeth bought the house from the Collier family.
She
lived in and practised medicine at the house right up until her
tragic death in 1961.
She
was remembered as a person of great compassion, love and
unselfishness towards her fellow human beings.
Her
father then made the house into the Ray Schauder Memorial Home until
he sold it in 1967 to the Salvation Army's Social Services.
The home served many altruistic purposes until it was
sold into private hands in 1998.
The present owners have lovingly restored and
renovated this grand old home, with it's lavish Oregon pine
features, to it's original gracious form, merely adding luxury
finishes and modern facilities.
The entrance hall, dining room, kitchen and bedrooms
have been meticulously restored to the highest standard and convey a
feeling of space and grandeur.
In addition to the house, an annex has been built in
the garden so as to harmonise with the style of the house, to
provide additional accommodation.
